Characterization-
“She had been saving every penny she could for months,
with this result. Twenty dollars a week doesn't go far. Expenses had been
greater than she had calculated. They always are. Only $1.87 to buy a present
for Jim. Her Jim. Many a happy hour she had spent planning for something nice
for him. Something fine and rare and sterling--something just a little bit near
to being worthy of the honor of being owned by
Jim.”
The way she saved all that money, penny by penny, shows
how loving and devoted she is. She tried her best to get Jim a great Christmas
present. I think that both of them have real character, but in my opinion Della
had a little more, from what was shown in the story.
Allusion:
The story makes references to the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. It says that Della's hair would've made the Queen of Sheba's jewels and gifts look dull, and that Jim's watch would've made King Solomon jealous. King Solomon was known for his wisdom and wealth. Upon hearing tales of his actions, the Queen of Sheba paid him a visit, giving him gold, spices, and stones. The Magi happened to be astronomers who came from the city of Sheba. After seeing a new star in the night sky (which signified the birth of a new ruler), the Magi followed its path, ending up in Bethlehem.
